In Sri Lanka, our traditional performing arts had rare from of interdependence with religious rituals. Our traditional dance and music were integrated with religious rituals.( like the Kankariya and the Gammaduwa).The chief performer was the officiating priest for the ritual .Consequently this unique arrangement insured the stability of our traditional performing arts and artistes. The community undertook supporting the ritual art forms and artistes, thus traditions were conserved with a religious dedication.
In the west the performing arts received Royal patronage along with the committed participation of the Nobility. That insured high artistic standards in Theater, Opera, Ballet, and Classical Music. In unbroken flow of patronage today the fine arts are supported by the state and private foundations.
With the introduction of the free market economy is on a fast track and the younger generation beyond recognition. Now that the economy is on a fast track and the younger generation economically empowered to a greater degree, their life style and aspirations have changed accordingly. Entertainment seem to top their list of priorities thus creating an unprecedented upsurge in artistic enterprises.
